Thirteen things on my desk

posted on Thursday, March, 29th, 2007 in Thursday Thirteen

This is another one of these meme thingies that I seem to have started to like recently. At least I find myself taking part in them again and again, even though I know they serve no real purpose (but then again, what in my life does?). And at least they give me something to write.
So, this one I found here and it is a regular thing called “Thursday Thirteen”. How this works is apparently that you choose a theme on which you list 13 things and then just leave a link there. Funny.
So, apparently I’m not supposed to use the same theme as somebody else, but since I like this one and my creativity is quite low at the moment, I will do it anyway. Besides, she did it for a fictional character from her book, I do it with my own desk – even though my mess is probably a lot less eclectic.

Thirteen Things on my desk

  1. my computer screen, one of the speakers and my modem
  2. my filofax and a separate little notebook with all my internet login names and passwords and stuff
  3. my mobile phone (I never actually use that thing to call somebody, it’s almost always turned off and I don’t really know why I keep it in the first place)
  4. a bottle of water
  5. a little white IKEA desk lamp (best 5 Euros I ever spent at that store)
  6. usually 2 – 5 Bookcrossing books (the ones I got sent as part of a bookring or -ray), at the moment also the new Gunslinger Born sketchbook (I can’t wait to get my hands on the actual comics)
  7. a pack of tissues (I’ve got a cold)
  8. a little pencil case with all kinds of pens in several colors, some fountain pens, some pencils, a big black marker, scissors and other assorted stuff
  9. the latest price list of the german postal service (constantly have to look up the shipping cost for sending out books for Bookcrossing) and adress stickers
  10. a scalpel with changeable blades (for when I get crafty; it works better for me than a regular cutter knife, probably a vestige from my days as a biology student)
  11. my diary
  12. a blank notebook or a pile of blank paper for taking notes, making lists or just doodling
  13. some seashells and bones I brought from New Zealand and Australia (I am just trying to string all that stuff together to make something like a curtain to hang on the wall)

Hm, I just realized that my desk is appalingly uncluttered – and when I look around me, so is the rest of my room. Well, apart from the odd animal skull lying around (the few ones I didn’t hang up on the walls) and the 7 pots with maple seedlings, which I hope to cultivate into bonsai trees , and the dozens of tatto designs I pinned up on the wall over my desk to try to decide on what to get as my third one sometime this summer, and the stack of boxes holding the slides I wanted to scan and throw away since last year or so.
But apart from that everything’s really neat and tidy around here.
Hm, and the sad thing is: I actually like it that way. No creative chaos for me. Or, at the most an orderly kind of chaos. No clutter and stuff I don’t really need anymore. Ever since I started my semi-nomadic lifestyle I got very good at letting go of stuff, so whatever I have in my room is only stuff I am actually still using. Anything I discover lounging about forgotten on some dusty bookshelf is remorselessly thrown out. Even books, with the difference that they don’t actually land in the rubbish bin, but are given away at Bookcrossing or Bookmooch instead.
Of course, the downside to this is that I had to buy several things a couple of times, because I had given it away or sold it on ebay or whatever and then needed it again some time later.
My dad is the complete opposite of me in this regard, because he does never throw anything away. Trouble is, he’s got to buy things a couple of times over nonetheless, because he can’t find them in all the heaps of stuff he’s keeping in the garage, the cellar and various sheds in the garden. Well, to be honest, usually he does find most things again. Right after he bought a new one…
