Thirteen things on my desk
This is another one of these meme thingies that I seem to have started to like recently. At least I find myself taking part in them again and again, even though I know they serve no real purpose (but then again, what in my life does?). And at least they give me something to write.
So, this one I found here and it is a regular thing called “Thursday Thirteen”. How this works is apparently that you choose a theme on which you list 13 things and then just leave a link there. Funny.
So, apparently I’m not supposed to use the same theme as somebody else, but since I like this one and my creativity is quite low at the moment, I will do it anyway. Besides, she did it for a fictional character from her book, I do it with my own desk – even though my mess is probably a lot less eclectic.
Thirteen Things on my desk
- my computer screen, one of the speakers and my modem
- my filofax and a separate little notebook with all my internet login names and passwords and stuff
- my mobile phone (I never actually use that thing to call somebody, it’s almost always turned off and I don’t really know why I keep it in the first place)
- a bottle of water
- a little white IKEA desk lamp (best 5 Euros I ever spent at that store)
- usually 2 – 5 Bookcrossing books (the ones I got sent as part of a bookring or -ray), at the moment also the new Gunslinger Born sketchbook (I can’t wait to get my hands on the actual comics)
- a pack of tissues (I’ve got a cold)
- a little pencil case with all kinds of pens in several colors, some fountain pens, some pencils, a big black marker, scissors and other assorted stuff
- the latest price list of the german postal service (constantly have to look up the shipping cost for sending out books for Bookcrossing) and adress stickers
- a scalpel with changeable blades (for when I get crafty; it works better for me than a regular cutter knife, probably a vestige from my days as a biology student)
- my diary
- a blank notebook or a pile of blank paper for taking notes, making lists or just doodling
- some seashells and bones I brought from New Zealand and Australia (I am just trying to string all that stuff together to make something like a curtain to hang on the wall)
Hm, I just realized that my desk is appalingly uncluttered – and when I look around me, so is the rest of my room. Well, apart from the odd animal skull lying around (the few ones I didn’t hang up on the walls) and the 7 pots with maple seedlings, which I hope to cultivate into bonsai trees , and the dozens of tatto designs I pinned up on the wall over my desk to try to decide on what to get as my third one sometime this summer, and the stack of boxes holding the slides I wanted to scan and throw away since last year or so.
But apart from that everything’s really neat and tidy around here.
Hm, and the sad thing is: I actually like it that way. No creative chaos for me. Or, at the most an orderly kind of chaos. No clutter and stuff I don’t really need anymore. Ever since I started my semi-nomadic lifestyle I got very good at letting go of stuff, so whatever I have in my room is only stuff I am actually still using. Anything I discover lounging about forgotten on some dusty bookshelf is remorselessly thrown out. Even books, with the difference that they don’t actually land in the rubbish bin, but are given away at Bookcrossing or Bookmooch instead.
Of course, the downside to this is that I had to buy several things a couple of times, because I had given it away or sold it on ebay or whatever and then needed it again some time later.
My dad is the complete opposite of me in this regard, because he does never throw anything away. Trouble is, he’s got to buy things a couple of times over nonetheless, because he can’t find them in all the heaps of stuff he’s keeping in the garage, the cellar and various sheds in the garden. Well, to be honest, usually he does find most things again. Right after he bought a new one…

Welcome to Thursday Thirteen. You can make your list about ANYTHING you want – as long as it is a list of 13 things. We copy each other’s ideas all the time. I keep tissues on my desk all the time, too.
Happy Thursday Thirteen! As I look around at my own desk (and see how completely CLUTTERED it is) I realize I could have at least 3 TT’s with the same topic and never repeat myself!!
Hi Sandra. Just wanted to thank a true book lover for stopping by my 13 today! As for desks, we don’t have that in common. LOL Mine is terribly, terribly cluttered. LOL
[...] Everybody lies [...]
Thanks for dropping by my site and happy T13
You do, of course, realise that any thief who breaks into you house can now cause untold damage to your online presence
Nah, they can’t. Because I am much more paranoid than is good for me and have noted down my passwords in an encrypted style that only I can understand.
Great list and the last one always happens to me. When I buy the thing I lost and go to put it away, by golly there is the one I was looking for..lol
Terrific Thursday Thirteen!
Thank you for your visit.
Have a wonderful day!
Happy TT’ing!

Hi there! Thanks for stopping by my T13. I thought I’d do the same for you.
To answer your question about why House isn’t on my list… I’ve watched a few episodes, and just didn’t enjoy it that much. I don’t know why… it’s just not my type of show, I suppose.
Cool list! It’s good to have an uncluttered desk – helps to keep your thoughts clear or something like that. =)
There is a list of phobias! Go to google search page and type in phobias. You’ll get lots of results. That’s how I found the “proper” names!
I’m not sure I could limit myself to only 13 things on my desk…
I throw things away, sometimes to the extent that historical articifacts would be in short supply for my descendents, if it weren’t for my writings. Tons of drafts, are the only things, I keep too much of. (One day I will post some pics of my dog.)
I wonder if your IKEA desk lamp is the same one sitting on my desk? It’s an Expressivo. Of course, mine’s blue…
Indeed, it is the same model. Aren’t they just fantastic? Small, flexible and works perfectly. And to think other people spend something like 80 Bucks for a designer lamp that doesn’t look any better.
