The man they call Jayne
Just. Can’t. Stop. Singing. This. Song.
This tune just crawled inside my head and took up permanent residence there. It’s gorram awful, I think I might be addicted. LOL
But the thing that really worries me is that I feel like I might be developing a slight crush on Jayne now. If I could knit, I would even make myself one of these silly hats… How sick is that?
For all of you have never seen Firefly (poor bastards), here is the scene from the episode Jaynestown (do I have to mention that this is one of my favorite eps now?) were this song was sung. I think, the dialogue in this scene is just priceless (well, just like in the rest of the series…). My favorite part was always Simon: “No, THIS must be what going mad feels like.”
The only thing that always bugged me is that you can’t hear all of the song.
And while I was trawling YouTube for more things Firefly, I stumbled across this little gem (which is apparently hidden on the DVDs as well - can’t believe I didn’t find that yet): an a capella version of the complete song sung by Adam Baldwin himself.
With his hat.
Just one word: classic.
I find it admirable that he can actually sit down in front of a camera and just belt out this silly song with so much passion. And he’s really got a quite passable singing voice, too.
And, yes, I want one of those hats! For when I go to London to the Serenity-screening in June. I just ordered my ticket today and I’m already counting the days…
To paraphrase one of Wash’s quotes:
“A woman walks down the street in that hat, people know she’s not afraid of anything.” LOL

Here are the lyrics, by the way - and, yes, I do know them by heart meanwhile:
The Hero of Canton
Jayne
The man they call Jayne
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain’t hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now Jayne saw the Mudders’ backs breaking
He saw the Mudders lament
And he saw the magistrate taking
Every dollar and leaving five cents
So he said, “You can’t do that to my people”
He said “You can’t crush ‘em under your heel”
Jayne strapped on his hat
And in five seconds flat
Stole everything Boss Higgins had to steal
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain’t hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne
Now here is what separates heroes
From common folk like you and I
The man they call Jayne
He turned ’round his plane
And let that money hit the sky
He dropped it onto our houses
He dropped it into our yards
And the man call Jayne
He turned ’round his plane
And headed out for the stars
He robbed from the rich and he gave to the poor
Stood up to the Man and he gave him what for
Our love for him now ain’t hard to explain
The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne!
