T13 #6: Thirteen good books I read this year

After doing a movie centered T13 last week, I thought it should be a book list this week. The thing is, I read a lot. Usually 3 – 5 books a week, sometimes more, rarely less. So, making a list of all-time favorites doesn’t make much sense for me, because not only are they changing often when I encounter new favorites, but also because I must have read thousands of books in my life and I remember only a fraction of them. I am sure I have forgotten dozens that I really liked at the time. So, in the spirit of short-term memory, I composed a list of the 13 best books out of the 60 I have read so far this year. (My complete reading list – in case anybody is interested – is on my Bookcrossing bookshelf page.)
They are listed in the order I read them, the most recent one on top.
1. David R. Palmer – Emergence
2. Stephen King – Cell
3. Lionel Shriver – We need to talk about Kevin
4. Dorothea Brande – Becoming a Writer
5. Jon McGregor – If nobody speaks of remarkable things
6. Chris Baker – Kokopu Dreams
7. John Gray – Straw dogs
8. Michael Marshall Smith – Only forward
9. Geraldine Brooks – A Year of Wonders
10. Kazuo Ishiguro – Never let me go
11. Terry Pratchett – Going Postal
12. Dodie Smith – I Capture the Castle
13. Saki – Tobermory and other stories

Great list! We are currently reading The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards.
My sister-in-law is addicted to Bookcrossing! I signed up but haven’t dropped one yet…took one to Paris to do and forgot to leave the book behind [duh!].
I don’t know most of the names on the list; must be time for me to expand my reading circle.
Going Postal is SO GOOD. Makes you laugh and think. How cool is that?
I’ve heard good things about Kevin. I’ll have to suggest it for my book club.
Great list! Stephen King scares the crap out of me! Can’t read his stuff! Thanks for visiting me!
Wow, thats a lot of books!! I love to read too, but don’t nearly read that many books in a week!

I love books! Stephen King is my favorite, I haven’t read The Cell yet, though.
And I can’t wait to look up some of the others you listed!
I peeked at the rest of your blog and I love the 13 tattoos post, I’m designing my next one right now.
I am SO jealous that you’re able to squeeze 3-5 books in a week! I’m only on #25 this year…
