So much for NaNo

samulli on December 1st, 2008

I did it. I actually managed to write 50.000 words during November, so officially I won NaNo - along with several thousand other folks. 8-)

I am pretty proud of myself for finally sticking with something all the way through to the end and reaching a goal. This is not a regular occurence in my life, so it really makes me happy.

Unfortunately my story is far from finished after 50K words. Which is why I will join some other crazy folk on the NaNo forums and keep on writing through December to make it to 100.000 words by the end of the year. After that, we’ll see.

Sadly, this means that this blog will probably go on being more or less neglected for the time being.

I wish all of you a merry Christmas already, just in case I shouldn’t get around to posting again before. ;)

  1. But… but… header! We’re almost there!

  2. Congratulations! What actually happens to all those novels (novellas really, if they are 50,000 words) that people write? Do any of them see the light of day?

  3. Don’t worry, Susan. Of course I’ll take the time for your header. Just let me know any new developments.
After all, it’s not like I actually write 24/7. Taking a bit of time out to focus on other stuff can only help. All I was saying was that I would neglect my own blog for a while longer. ;)

  4. Hi Nicholas,
yes, in fact several of those novels have been published. After much revision, obviously, because all you can produce during NaNo is a very rough first draft. I could have sworn there was a whole page with a list of authors, who managed to get their NaNo novels published, but I can’t for the life of me find it right now (except the few who are mentioned in the pep talks).
But considering that about 21.000 people have finished the contest this year, I guess most of these novels will never see the light of day - which in many cases is probably for the better. On the other hand, since nowadays crap like Twilight and Eragon gets published (and read), I wouldn’t be surprised if some other folks got lucky, too.
But as you probably know better than I do, the really hard work is not writing the first draft, but actually polishing that into a publishable story. And I think the overwhelming majority of NaNoers won’t bother with that.

  5. Congrats?
