New Year’s resolutions and other foolishness
I am not a big fan of New Years resolutions, mainly because they are usually broken by February at the latest. But nevertheless I have used the holidays to think about some things I’d like to do this year.
There are lots of things I have to want to change in my life and even thinking about all of them is daunting. So for the most part I don’t.
What I was thinking about a lot, though, is this blog. Over the recent months I have been struggling to find a real purpose for it. I had trouble staying motivated to write posts, because I didn’T really know what direction to take this whole thing in. But I didn’t want to give it up completely either.
If you are one of my regular readers you will have noticed that this place doesn’t have a main topic. I can’t even say I am writing mainly about what happens in my life, because then, frankly, this place would be even emptier of posts than it is now. There’s just nothing interesting happening in my life – which is entirely my own fault and will hopefully change again some time. But for the nearer future I will have to come up with other stuff to write about.
Now, as every successful blogger will tell you, you should write about things you have a passion for. This is advice I intend to take. So what do I have a passion for?
There is only one obvious answer for me: books. Well, that and tv, and my dog, and webdesign, and comics, and gardening, and fast cars, and photography, and traveling, and lots of other stuff. But the one thing I always do whenever I have a spare minute, the one thing I really couldn’t live without is reading. There have always been books in my life, to the extent that much of the time I have trouble coping with so-called “real life” because all those invented worlds in the stories I read seem so much more real to me than reality.
I know this is probably not very original, but I think this year I will steer this blog more towards the bookish side of life. That doesn’t mean there will only be book reviews here (no matter how much I love a topic, I will never be able to strictly adhere to it forever). I have plans for some other new categories as well, which I will reveal as I begin writing posts for them.
Just as I am not much of a fan of New Year’s resolutions I also am not very good at making decisions and sticking to them. So I thought it would be a good idea to write this one down. We’ll see if it will help.

Is that your library!!?? If you decide to run a contest for free books, I’ll be rushing to enter!
You are right about New Year’s resolutions being broken at great speed but I made only one resolution this year and intend to keep it. Let’s see.
LOL, no, I have to admit I got this picture from flickr. I wish it was mine, though. Nothing beats living in your own private library.
At the moment I have neither the room now the money for that, though. I only keep the books I know for certain I will want to re-read, everything else gets exchanged for new reading fodder at Bookcrossing or Bookmooch.
But running a contest for books here would actually be a great idea. I’ll get back to you on that.
Samulli! Are those all your books? WOW!!!
My blog is based on things I enjoy, too, which lately has been cooking LOL! Good luck with your quest
