Life goes on
Sorry for my lack of new posts lately. I have been totally absorbed in a fantastic book I recently found:
Alan Weisman “The World Without Us”
It is exactly about what you would expect from the title: a world without humans. How would the planet develop if humans just suddenly vanished overnight.
Since that is one of my favorite daydreams, I just couldn’t pass up this book. I’m glad to say it actually almost lived up to my expectations. Some aspects I am most interested in haven’t been dealt with in quite the detail I was looking for, but others I never even thought about were brought to my attention. Overall I am very glad I found this book (for which, incidentally I have to thank Skellie, who mentioned the related website in an awesome post about resources for creative minds).
It was definitely not the last time I have read this book. There is so much food for thought in here that I will want to re-read some passages multiple times.
Just a while ago I mentioned to a friend that I absolutely hate the fact that I will die in a couple of decades at the latest, and won’t be able to see how it all finally ends for humankind. Well, this book kinda gave me a sneak peek at how life on earth will go on without pesky humans polluting and destroying everything they lay their hands on.
And what I loved the most was the fact that by the time some new sentient species develops there will be not much left to show that humans ever existed at all. Except our poinsonous waste, that is. But apart from that humankind will have been just a blip on the radar for a very short time (geologically speaking). We will vanish from the face of the earth like millions of other insignificant species before and after us. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the single most consoling thought I can think of.

Hubby and I were talking about that last night. It would have been wonderful to see the world 100 years from now. But you see, we may not be physically here but I believe we can still see it, somehow, somewhere.
I would love to read this book too!
This sounds like a fascinating topic. I’d like to read that book. I think if the humans all vanished the animals would throw one hell of a party!
