Drive The Race

I officially have a new obsession. And it’s all Nathan’s fault.

Ever since I saw “Serenity” I have been hanging around Nathan Fillion’s MySpace page, getting to know likewise obsessed people and having fun. And for a while now all they could talk over there was Nathan’s new t.v. show called “Drive”. If you wanna know what’s it about, check out the official Fox site and the unofficial fan site (I can’t believe there is already a thriving fan community out there for a show that has been on air for exactly 2 days!).
Well, what with that show being produced by Fox, who we all know were responsible for cancelling “Firefly” and are therefore the enemy of good television, I had originally decided to boykott it. Which would have been easy, because it won’t air here in Germany for - well, probably ever. Plus, I am usually not really interested in car races and such, and I can’t really spend an hour drooling over a muscle car or something.
But, of course, resistance was futile in the end. How could I ever resist watching anything with Nathan in it? Stupid even to try, really. Besides, the show was created and is written by Tim Minear (who worked together with Joss Whedon on Firefly and Angel, and is therefore by association a good guy - never mind, it’s all a bit complicated for outsiders). And so, thanks to modern technology and the wonders of the intenet, I was able to watch the first three episodes today.

And what shall I say? THEY ROCK! Absolutely friggin’ fantabulous. And not only because of Nathan’s presence. Because, you see, there is actually a pretty good story goin’ on here. It was described as a cross between The Amazing Race (only better) and LOST (only not on an island). And that’s actually true. There is way less racing involved than I feared, but the bits they had were actually cool. And just like with LOST they have a great cast, lots of characters you get to know slowly, each with their own secrets. And then, of course, you have the shady organizers of The Race, who nobody knows anything about.

Well, granted, the storyline may have some logical holes you could drive a truck through, but hey, it’s television, not rocket science. From the point of entertainment value this show is definitely right up there with LOST and HOUSE in my book. Plus, it’s got Nathan Fillion in it, so what’s not to love?
So there go my Monday nights.
Why isn’t it Monday yet, goddammit?
