The joys of younger men

This guy is just so incredibly cute, that each week I can’t wait for Thursday and a new episode of Numb3rs.

And that is noteworthy why? Because the boy is 3 years younger than me, which makes him a good 15 years younger than the guys I am usually interested in. Plus, on Numb3rs he plays a mathematician, which to me is a profession usually decidedly unsexy, yet he pulls it off. Amazing, really.

I saw him first in The Santa Clause” sometime in the 90s, when he was just a teenager (cutest elf I know of besides Legolas and Haldir, especially with this hat he was wearing all the time). I couldn’t fucking believe it when they cut off his beautiful curly hair for “10 things I hate about you”. Luckily, in “Serenity” he was back to his own lovely self, and now in Numb3rs he is looking just adorable.

One of the unfair things in this world is that men often get more and more attractive the older they get. David is definitely one of them. Since I saw him the first time more than 10 years ago he has gotten better looking every year. Plus, he is quite a good actor, so I am fairly certain I can look forward to see a lot more of him on screen in the years to come.

I can’t wait to see what he will be like when he is forty. Or fifty…

(And I really should get those DVDs one of these days.)

Mine! My own! My preciousssss….

It’s here. The wonderful two-disc Serenity Collector’s Edition.
And it’s great. “Shiny” doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Not only does it have lots of fantastic extras (notably a new cast commentary and the River Tam Sessions, among much other great features), it also looks so much better than the original DVD (the german version was even worse).
I love the packing, I love the new artwork. So much so that I keep the DVDs on my desk where I can see it all day while I sit on my computer (which more or less really is all day long).
Also, I love the fact that it has a flyer from QMx inside (cool, cool merchandise! The Blue Sun travel posters and the Serenity Blueprints are mine for sure - as soon as I pay off the overdraft on my credit card.).

The new cast commentary with Joss, Nathan, Adam, Summer, and Ron is a blast. I stayed up until 2 a.m. the night I received the DVD to watch it. It was definitely worth losing a few hours of sleep for. Nathan and Joss are just hilarious, constantly teasing and making fun of each other and everyone around them. And Summer - I can’t even begin to express how sweet and shy and cute she sounds. If I were a guy I totally would have fallen in love with her then and there. Adam’s view of the whole movie was, not surprisingly, wholly centered around Jayne, which cracked me up more than once. (”It’s all about the grapes, man!” LOL) But the best thing was Nathan’s and Joss’ picking on Ron (who was hardly in the movie at all). They kept asking him about his thoughts about particular scenes and how he felt about his role in them - which, of course, was non-existent.
It was great to see how well they all get on with each other after all this time (the commentary was recorded in March this year, more than 2 years after filming the movie).

Plus, Joss said in an interview that hope for a possible sequel for the movie lies with the sales of this Collector’s Edition. So how could I not buy one? We all do still hope to get our Big Damn Trilogy someday, right? (Well, to be honest, I don’t have all that much hope for that happening, for various reasons. But I could be wrong. I have been wrong before…)

And you know what I’ll order next? This here:

The incredible documentary about the fans’ involvement with Serenity/Firefly. I’ve known about it for a while, and I always wanted to see it one day. It is such a work of love - just like the tv show and the movie themselves, really. I just wasn’t sure if I was obsessed enough to actually want to buy it. Guess that question’s settled then. ;)

I have no money whatsoever for this, I am so not a person for conventions normally, I could even have a job by then (yeah, right) - but I just read the guest list of this Firefly-convention and decided on the spot that I had to be there, no matter what.
I mean, honestly: Adam Baldwin is gonna be there. So, to say it with the immortal words of Jayne, how could I stay away? LOL
Plus, it’s in London. Not that I ever need another excuse to go there again (I’ve been only twice this year).
The only thing that could possibly be even better than meeting Adam would be having his Joss-ness himself there. Or Summer, I’d love to meet her one day, too. Well, just like the whole big damn crew, for that matter. But for now I’ll settle for Adam. And Sean. And Morena.
I have to order tickets. Right now.

Damn it, it’s almost midnight, but I’m so excited that I’ll never be able to sleep now. Ah well, time to watch Jaynestown again, I guess.

My first convert!

Posted by samulli on Jul 22nd, 2007

Hah!
Without even meaning to I just managed to convert the first of my friends to Firefly. This is amazing, and if you would know my friend you would know just how much a testament to the qualities of the show his becoming a fan is.
When I put on the DVD Friday night and we watched “Serenity”, the pilot episode, it was just because there was nothing interesting on TV and he had requested something funny. And although he seemed to quite enjoy it I didn’t expect any enthusiasm whatsoever from him. I have known him long enough now to be certain of his absolute unpredictability in pretty much any area.
So when we were bored yesterday and I suggested to watch another episode I was mildly surprised at his ready consent, but didn’t interpret it as any more than desperate boredom and lack of other ideas. And since I didn’t expect him to “endure” more than a few episodes before he completely zoned out and lost interest, I didn’t continue with the next episode (which would have been “The Train Job”), but skipped a few and put on “Safe” instead.
And, lo and behold, 40 minutes later he complained that it was over way too fast and told me to just go on to the next one. And the next one. And the one after that as well…
In the end we got up to “Trash” before we decided to stop because neither one of us could keep our eyes open anymore. And today he started to berate me for leaving out 3 episodes after the pilot, because he can’t stand the fact to miss anything. We even discussed if it would be better to watch those early episodes first before watching the last 3 ones he hasn’t seen so far. I can just see this is going to be another long night in front of the TV. Not that I’m complaining, though. LOL
In the car we even sung “The Hero of Canton”, which he had heard before on the drive back from the airport when I picked him up on Friday, but didn’t find terribly interesting then. Today, when he knew the context of the song he found it hilarious, of course.
It’s fantastic to see someone else just as excited about this show as I am myself. And I am almost envious that he can watch them now for the first time. There are still 6 episodes he hasn’t seen yet. And then, of course, there is the movie. Lucky sod.
It would be nice to be able to watch them for the first time all over again. But it is also great to watch them together with somebody else for the first time, to hear him laugh in all the right places and to just generally share the fun. And I’m curious what will happen when he has seen it all: will he want to start over right away, or will he maybe want to watch all 7 seasons of Buffy now - just to see what else Joss Whedon has to offer? Ah, the suspence!

Time to play the lottery again…

I want to win that!
Joss Whedon (a.k.a. God) is auctioning himself off for charity. The five highest bidders at this ebay-auction will get to enjoy a dinner with Joss himself in San Diego at this years’ Comic Con.
Awww, fucking hell, I’d already be happy if I’d be able to afford to go to the con. I’ve never been to one of those things and up until my Firefly-obsession begun I never had the urge to go to one, either (didn’t even know these things existed, to be honest). Now, of course, I would pay my last penny to get on one where any one of the BDH is scheduled to show up - much more so for Joss, the Boss, himself. But unfortunately I already spent my last pennies last week in London, so that’s that for the time being.
Winning a seat at this dinner would be - well, a bit like I-died-and-went-to-heaven, really. I’m not even sure I could come up with a halfway decent topic for conversation with him (did I ever come up with anything resembling a halfway decent topic of conversation with anyone? *scratches head*). But who cares? I could always just let him talk all evening. I just bloody well hope somebody from the Whedonesque crowd will manage to go and will come back with a detailed report.
.
Damn it, Mal, why can’t I be rich?
Uh, yeah, because I don’t have a job. Right. That’s out then…
Did I mention lately that my life sucks at the moment? (Not really, LOL)

Addictive

Posted by samulli on Jun 29th, 2007

I’m gettin’ bloody addicted to Jericho. Since they started showing it on german tv a few weeks ago I have downloaded the whole first season and am now watching them a bit faster than they are shown on tv - but still spaced out enough to last me a while, because I heard the show got cancelled after this one season. I’m about halfway through and I think, so far it’s a brilliant show (no wonder it got cancelled). So good in fact that I am thinking of actually buying the DVDs when they come out, which is highly unusual for me. But then again, I just love stories where most of humankind gets wiped off the face of the earth, so this show wasn’t a hard sell on me.

Well, just a few minutes ago I read that CBS apparently decided to bring back Jericho for another season (or at least another 7 episodes for now) after strong protests from the fans. That’s what I call an encouraging sign that at least some networks actually listen to their viewers.
Of course, it could have something to do with the 50,000 pounds of peanuts that the fans bombarded the networks office with… LOL

I wonder what we would have to bombard the FOX office with to make them resurrect Drive? Car bombs would be my first idea, but I guess that’d be a case for the Homeland Security then. Ah well, whatever. Fox being Fox they wouldn’t be impressed by anything anyway. We’ve seen that already with Firefly… Now they’re gonna show us the last 2 episodes of Drive they already shot and call it the “season’s finale”. Yeah, right. Because the usual season of a tv show lasts for all of 6 episodes, uh huh. Bastards.

lenjames.jpgOn another note: I am almost certain that I have met one of the actors, Lennie James, last week in London. On the tube, to be specific. I had about 10 minutes to watch him (and I’m afraid I stared at him quite blatantly) and I kept debating with myself if it was him or not. I actually wanted to check later if he even lived in London, but I totally forgot about it (early onset Alzheimers, I tell you). I just remembered when I watched the show again. Apparently Mr. James was born and raised in London, so it is not too improbable that it could’ve been him. That’s what I love about being in London: it really could have been somebody interesting. Not that it does make one jota of difference, really, since I would never approach any celebrity on the street anyway to ask for autographs or something.

By the way, I love the fact that you’re all apparently quite jealous of me for having been to London - again - but really there’s no need to be. London is very nice an’ all, and it’s certainly one of my favorite cities (though probably not for the obvious reasons), but really it’s not all that it’s cracked up to be. It is just another town after all, only bigger…

The Browncoats Prayer

OUR JOSS,
Who art in Hollywood,
Whedon be thy name.
Thy ideas come, and will be done
On film as they are in Comic Books.

Give us someday a little more Serenity,
And deliver us from Reality Television.
For thine is the Wit, the Wisdom,
And the Imagination

Forever and ever,

AMEN.

Indeed. There is nothing to add. Found here, via a link on Whedonesque.
