Everybody lies

…the only variable is about what

Buy by chapter

lonely planet costa rica Now that is what I would call a good idea:
Lonely Planet is offering a new service, called Buy By Chapter. Which is exactly what it sounds like: Instead of having to lug around a whole weighty Lonely Planet guide – for which you have to shell out serious money – you can now buy single chapters as PDF files, which are not only easier to carry around, but also substantially cheaper.
The downside is, of course, that you have to lug around your laptop with you instead. Or some other device that can read PDF files. But, let’s be realistic: how many backpackers nowadays are travelling without one anyway? ;)
The option isn’t yet available for every Lonely Planet title, at the moment it’s only offered for Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean, also some phrasebooks and walking guides. But one would hope that that will change soon.
I would definitely prefer this option to the “real” books for short trips where I don’t get to travel around a complete country anyway. Instead of lugging around the 3 pound complete guide to Australia I could have just downloaded the chapters on Sydney and Perth when I was there, as these were the only ones I had use for anyway at the time. Would have saved me a lot of backpain, I’m sure.
