Advice to Aspiring Writers

posted on Sunday, February, 18th, 2007 in reading matter

I have never heard of Maureen Hull before (probably an unpardonable oversight on my part), but she has some pretty funny tips for aspiring writers (found here).
I liked point 5 and 6 the most. And now I’m going to find out what Maureen Hull has written (hoping I won’t have to add yet another couple of books to my TBR stack…).

Later:

Phew, I got away. It seems she writes children’s books.

No danger there for me, especially after my latest disappionting experience with one of these so-called classic children’s books: Kenneth Grahame’s “Wind in the willows”.

I may be the only person in the world who didn’t enjoy the book, but I thought it was utter drivel. I couldn’t even finish it, even though it’s just a wee little book. It took me about 5 days to make it past the halfway mark before I just decided to stop wasting my time with it (I could have read 5 other books in those wasted 5 days).

This book just doesn’t work for me on so many levels, that I can’t even begin to write about it. I just know this is one book I could never read to any child in any good conscience. And I know I would have hated it just as much when I was a child myself.
