Congratulations are in order

vdo-karin.jpgNo, not for me, of course.

I just read that Vincent D’Onofrio and his beautiful wife Karin are expecting another baby soon.

Even though hearing that makes me insanely jealous of her, I am still happy for them.

Vincent D’Onofrio is not only one of my favorite actors, from the little I know about him he is also one of my favorite people (and of course it goes without saying that I have a huge crush on him).

Thinking about it I would even go as far as saying he is one of the three guys I would love to have a baby from myself (and, believe me, coming from me that is a huge compliment for a guy, because I don’t really want children at all).elias-vincent-leila.jpg

But since that is not likely to happen it is nice to see him so happy about becoming a daddy once again. After watching him portray this tormented soul Bobby Goren every week on Law & Order it is good to realize once again that his real life is a good deal happier.

And seeing as his first two kids, Elias and Leila, turned out pretty well (no wonder, with this guy’s good genes…), I can hardly wait to see the new baby.

I’m rarely gushing about other people’s kids, but isn’t that little boy just adorable? *sigh*

New Year’s resolutions and other foolishness

samulli on January 7th, 2008

33-books.jpgI am not a big fan of New Years resolutions, mainly because they are usually broken by February at the latest. But nevertheless I have used the holidays to think about some things I’d like to do this year.

There are lots of things I have to want to change in my life and even thinking about all of them is daunting. So for the most part I don’t.

What I was thinking about a lot, though, is this blog. Over the recent months I have been struggling to find a real purpose for it. I had trouble staying motivated to write posts, because I didn’T really know what direction to take this whole thing in. But I didn’t want to give it up completely either.

If you are one of my regular readers you will have noticed that this place doesn’t have a main topic. I can’t even say I am writing mainly about what happens in my life, because then, frankly, this place would be even emptier of posts than it is now. There’s just nothing interesting happening in my life - which is entirely my own fault and will hopefully change again some time. But for the nearer future I will have to come up with other stuff to write about.

Now, as every successful blogger will tell you, you should write about things you have a passion for. This is advice I intend to take. So what do I have a passion for?

books.jpgThere is only one obvious answer for me: books. Well, that and tv, and my dog, and webdesign, and comics, and gardening, and fast cars, and photography, and traveling, and lots of other stuff. But the one thing I always do whenever I have a spare minute, the one thing I really couldn’t live without is reading. There have always been books in my life, to the extent that much of the time I have trouble coping with so-called “real life” because all those invented worlds in the stories I read seem so much more real to me than reality.

I know this is probably not very original, but I think this year I will steer this blog more towards the bookish side of life. That doesn’t mean there will only be book reviews here (no matter how much I love a topic, I will never be able to strictly adhere to it forever). I have plans for some other new categories as well, which I will reveal as I begin writing posts for them.

Just as I am not much of a fan of New Year’s resolutions I also am not very good at making decisions and sticking to them. So I thought it would be a good idea to write this one down. We’ll see if it will help. ;)

Welcome to 2008!

samulli on January 6th, 2008

I know I’m a bit late with my first post for this year. I could say that is because I just wanted to wait until I actually had something to say. Or because I am finding myself being more of a blog reader than a writer lately. Which would both be true. But the real reason is another one.

This year is shaping up to be quite a bit better than 2007 (which is not too hard). At least this time I am having one highlight already: My new laptop finally arrived 2 days ago (and naturally I have spent the last 2 days playing around with it).

After much deliberation I did finally break down right after Christmas and ordered it online on December, 27th. I transferred the money on the same afternoon, but because of those bleedin’ useless holidays it took forever to arrive, which as you can probably imagine, didn’t really increase my love for Christmas and everything related to it. So I had to go back to Leipzig last week without a new laptop. But when I came home for the weekend it was finally here.

And what can I say? I’m completely in love.

Not only is it shiny and new and beautiful (that would really be enough to fall in love with it). But it’s also working with all my other gadgets (external harddrive, camera, printer, scanner etc.) without any fuzz. But mostly I love it because it’s all mine, my own, my preciousssss…. *ahem, ok, Gollum-mode off* :)

laptop2.jpg

Ok, it came with Windows Vista pre-installed, which I’m not really certain I will keep for long (I’m more of an XP fan, but I will give Vista a try before I kick it). At least all the programs I regularly use do still work under Vista.

What I do look forward to most is watching DVDs on this laptop. My old one was not only a bit overtaxed with playing videos (no wonder with 128 MB RAM and an 8 year old graphics chip), it also only had an 8” screen, which made figuring out what exactly went on in a movie a bit of a hassle. Watching stuff like The Lord of the Rings on an 8” screen just doesn’t cut it, believe me. 15,4” is not exactly a cinema either, but it’ll be a hell of a lot easier on the eyes.

I already bought a new mouse to go with it, now all I need is a carry case. I am thinking about tweaking one of the numerous backpacks I have lying around here. Not only because I am absolutely broke for at least the next 3 months or so, but also because I don’t really want to walk around with a normal notebook carry case. They practically scream “I have a notebook in here, steal me!” ;)
